Protection Insurance for Trans people

24th June 2025

A Safer Space to Protect What Matters Most

Applying for insurance can feel daunting, especially for trans, non-binary, gender-expansive or intersex people. Many people have found the process to be intrusive, confusing, or unfriendly in the past. Thankfully, things are changing and we are here to support you every step of the way.

What is Protection Insurance?

Protection insurance is a term that describes different types of cover to help you or your loved ones if something unexpected happens. This can include:

  • Life insurance, which pays out a lump sum if you die
  • Critical illness cover, which pays out if you are diagnosed with a serious illness
  • Income protection, which can replace your income if you become too ill to work

We will explain each option in plain English and help you decide what, if any, might be right for you. You do not need to know anything about insurance before you get in touch.

Why Have Trans People Been Put Off?

The insurance world has not always been easy or welcoming. Invasive medical questions, confusion about names or pronouns, and a lack of understanding around transition or gender-affirming care have made the process stressful for many people.
Things are getting better. Insurers are improving the way they handle applications from trans, non-binary, gender-expansive and intersex people. We are here to make the process as smooth and respectful as possible.

How We Support You

  • We always use your preferred name and pronouns and will speak up for you with insurers if needed
  • We give clear advice about how much insurance you need, how long you might need it, and which type is suitable for your situation.
  • We review what you’ve already got to make sure you’re not applying for cover that you don’t need.
  • We support you at every step, from the first chat right through to paperwork and trust forms (these forms help make sure any payment goes to the right person).
  • We help you answer medical questions, including how to talk about your health, any medication you take (including HRT), or any planned treatment or surgery.
  • You will not be penalised for taking HRT. Taking HRT does not automatically mean higher prices or worse terms. We explain what you can expect so you do not need to worry about unfair treatment.
  • We have experience supporting trans clients and can give honest information about what to expect at each stage.
  • Our duty of care is to you, not the insurance company. We want you to feel informed and supported.

If You Are Planning Surgery

If you have a date booked for surgery, such as gender-affirming surgery, some insurers may postpone your life insurance application until you have recovered. If this applies to you, we will always let you know up front and help you plan the timing.

No Experience Needed

You do not need any knowledge about protection insurance to get started. We will explain everything clearly and help you at each stage, including:

  • Choosing the right cover
  • Answering medical questions
  • Filling in trust forms to make sure any money goes to who you want, quickly and tax-efficiently
